Association

The Association of Innovative Pharmaceutical Industry (AIFP) was founded in 1993. It brings together 35 companies developing and bringing new, more effective, safer medicines to patients. Most AIFP member companies come from countries that are cradles of drug research and development. In the last 30 years, these companies have developed 90% of new medicines. Their innovative medicines account for 70% of the global pharmaceutical market turnover.

From the beginning, AIFP's activities have been built on four strong pillars that have evolved:

  • Patient access to innovative medicines
  • Ethical conduct and transparency (including self-regulatory rules)
  • Benefits to society, the economy and
  • A collaboration with healthcare professionals and patients

Following these and in cooperation with other important partners, the Association has managed to participate in developing the Czech healthcare system, which has gradually shaped into its present form after 1989.

The Association has implemented several successful projects corresponding to its principles and the needs of the healthcare environment. For example, the certification of medical representatives, the Academy of Patient Organisations, the Disclosure Project (Transparentní spolupráce), Medicus Academy or Innovation for Life.

International cooperation

AIFP is a member of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies and Associations (EFPIA) and works extensively with the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (IFPMA) and the Innovative Pharmaceutical Companies of America (PhRMA).

Structure of the Association

The General Assembly is the supreme governing body of the Association, which decides on its strategic direction. It comprises representatives of member companies, usually CEOs for the Czech Republic or Central Europe.

The executive body of AIFP is the Board of Directors (Board), which meets twice a month and decides on all matters of the Association unless they fall under the authority of the General Assembly following the AIFP statutes. The General Assembly elects the members of the Board.

The activities of the Association are carried out by an Executive Team headed by the Executive Director, who represents AIFP externally. The Association also includes two controlling bodies - the Controlling Committee, which oversees the management of the Association, and the Ethics Committee, which oversees the compliance of the Association and its members with the AIFP Code of Practice.

Expert Working Groups, Platforms and Task Forces composed of representatives of member companies meet on the AIFP's premises. The nominated experts in these groups work on specific areas that are linked to the main objectives and values of the Association.
